The High Priestly Prayer of Christ: John 17:

This prayer of the Son of God was recorded to instruct the readers of their privileged place in their union with both the Father and the Son because of Christ’s ministry on their behalf (17:1–26)

Character of Jesus from this chapter

1. He is the One with God. (Perfect unity)

2. He is the Priest for all of us.

3. He is the Intercessor for all of us.

I. For Himself (vv. 1–5)

^{JN 17:1} Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You,

^{JN 17:2} even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.

^{JN 17:3} “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

^{JN 17:4} “ I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do.

^{JN 17:5} “Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

John 17:1-5 (요한복음)

¹ Jesus spoke these words; and lifted up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You,

1예수께서 이 말씀을 하시고 눈을 들어 하늘을 우러러 가라사대 아버지여 때가 이르렀사오니 아들을 영화롭게 하사 아들로 아버지를 영화롭게 하게 하옵소서

² as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.

2아버지께서 아들에게 주신 모든 자에게 영생을 주게 하시려고 만민을 다스리는 권세를 아들에게 주셨음이로소이다

³ “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

3영생은 곧 유일하신 참 하나님과 그의 보내신 자 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이니이다

⁴ “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

4아버지께서 내게 하라고 주신 일을 내가 이루어 아버지를 이 세상에서 영화롭게 하였사오니

⁵ “Now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

5아버지여 창세 전에 내가 아버지와 함께 가졌던 영화로써 지금도 아버지와 함께 나를 영화롭게 하옵소서

Someone asked, “What are you going to do today if you know that the earth would be destroyed tomorrow?” What would you answer for it?

One person said, “I will plant a tree today even the earth would be destroyed tomorrow.”

We might have many different responses.

What would you do today if you know that you will die tomorrow?

We might to do the very important thing in our life.

I. Jesus’ time has come

     예수님의 때가 이르렀슴

Jesus knew that tonight is the last night to spend time with His Disciples, and He will go through the cross to the Glory.

That is why He spent time with His Disciples very special private banquet and an event with invitation only. He wanted to spend the special private time with His Disciples only before He goes through all the persecution and He had waited for this supper with His Disciples for 3 years.

John 17:1 (요한복음)

Jesus spoke these words; and lifted up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You,

예수께서 이 말씀을 하시고 눈을 들어 하늘을 우러러 가라사대 아버지여 때가 이르렀사오니

아들을 영화롭게 하사 아들로 아버지를 영화롭게 하게 하옵소서

1. Jesus spoke these words;

     예수께서 이 말씀을 하시고

In John Chapter 13 to 16, He shared very important words with His Disciples during this time. These words were for His Disciples alone.

He washed His Disciples’ feet as an example to serve each other.

He released the Iscariot Judas on what he has to do.

After Iscariot Judas left the supper place He shared several important words for them

  1) Released the new commandment to love one another

  2) Peter’s denial as the weakness of the flesh

  3) He has a plan to leave them and go to Heaven. For the great hope

  4) Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life – Salvation is only through Jesus

  5) The promise of the Holy Spirit will come – He will help them

  6) Encourage them to abide in Him to fulfill their purpose of life

  7) They are belonging to Jesus, so the world will hate them.

  8) He mentioned about His resurrection

2. and lifted up His eyes to heaven, He said,

     눈을 들어 하늘을 우러러 가라사대

And then He prayed for Himself, His Disciples, and for us 2000 years ago.

You can find His prayer in this chapter.

I would like to share what He prayed for Himself today.

 3. Father, the hour has come;

       아버지여 때가 이르렀사오니

Do you know your time and your purpose of your life?

If you know your time and the purpose of your life, please raise your hand. I do not know my time exactly, but I feel it partially, and constantly God confirmed me the time and seasons.

I know the purpose of my life. That is why I am walking in the Lord with the vision no matter what circumstances I am under. I have gone through many tough times without giving up because of the vision and the purpose of my life.

Jesus had the purpose of His Life from the beginning through His Name “Jesus.”

Mark 10:45   (마가복음)

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

인자의 온 것은 섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려 함이니라

Jesus knew the purpose of His Life, and He lived and focused on it throughout His Life.

And tonight is the climax of His Life to fulfill His purpose on the earth. Jesus knew that He will be arrested tonight, stand at the illegal Sanhedrin court early in the morning, stand at the Roman governor Pilate’s court, tortured by the roman soldiers, all the Priest and Pharisees will be against Him, and receive death sentence, He will be mocked by the people, he will carry His Cross to the Calvary, to be crucified on the cross. He will die on the cross. He will be resurrected from the death.  

This was the most precious moment of the History in natural and the spiritual.

His time is to restore the relationship between the lost Children of the Lord’s who are us and Father God.

Colossians 1:20-22 (골로세서)

²⁰ and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

그의 십자가의 피로 화평을 이루사 만물 곧 땅에 있는 것들이나 하늘에 있는 것들을 그로 말미암아 자기와 화목케 되기를 기뻐하심이라

²¹ And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds,

전에 악한 행실로 멀리 떠나 마음으로 원수가 되었던 너희를

²² yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—

이제는 그의 육체의 죽음으로 말미암아 화목케 하사 너희를 거룩하고 흠 없고 책망할 것이 없는 자로 그 앞에 세우고자 하셨으니

It is a good time to give your life to the Lord if you do not know Jesus Christ.

4. glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You,

     아들을 영화롭게 하사 아들로 아버지를 영화롭게 하게 하옵소서

Through Jesus Christ’s blood and Jesus’ death God brought the reconciliation between Him and us. Father God glorified Jesus, because Jesus’ sacrifice accomplished the will of God. Jesus Glorified God through His Sacrifice..

II. Jesus Glorified Father God

    예수님께서 하나님을 영화롭게하심

John 17:4 (요한복음)

I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

아버지께서 내게 하라고 주신 일을 내가 이루어 아버지를 이 세상에서 영화롭게 하였사오니

1. I have glorified You on the earth.

    아버지를 이 세상에서 영화롭게 하였사오니

Jesus life itself was to glorify the Father God alone.

And this is one of the purpose of our life.

I  Corinthians 10:31 (고린도 전서)

Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

그런즉 너희가 먹든지 마시든지 무엇을 하든지 다 하나님의 영광을 위하여 하라

Someone debated about whether drinking wine or smoking is sin or not.

According to this 1 Corinthians, if you glorify the Lord, then do it exceedingly. If not, then stop completely.

Many times I could see that some people want to be glorified from the people. They always emphasized what they did and what happened because of them.

John 7:18a (요한복음)

He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory;

스스로 말하는 자는 자기 영광만 구하되

If some people accuse that you ruined his reputation because of your life or action, how will you respond to that kind of accusation? We do not need to concern ourselves on it as long as we glorify the Lord.

We have been crucified with Jesus Christ on the cross, which means that we are dead. The dead people do not need any reputation or honor, and there is no reputation or honor.

We do not need to be glorified at all, but only Jesus.

As you know that our Church name is One Glory Church. We only glorify Jesus, Father God and the Holy Spirit among us.

2. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

     아버지께서 내게 하라고 주신 일을 내가 이루어

Then how can we glorify the Lord alone in our life and in our church?

It is a simple as Jesus’ prayer.

“I have glorified You on the earth.

아버지를 이 세상에서 영화롭게 하였사오니

I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

아버지께서 내게 하라고 주신 일을 내가 이루어

The obedience is the key to glorify the Lord.

And the key of the obedience is to hear the voice of the Lord.

And the key to hear the voice of the Lord is the intimate relationship with the Lord.

John 5:19 (요한복음)

Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 아들이 아버지의 하시는 일을 보지 않고는 아무

것도 스스로 할 수 없나니 아버지께서 행하시는 그것을 아들도 그와 같이 행하느니라

Are you interested in jumping into the intimate relationship with the Lord?

How many people want to have intimate relationship with the Lord?

Our theme and goal is to enter the intimate relationship with the Lord.

Our motto is “To Know Jesus Christ and To Make Him Known”

We have to know Jesus Christ our Lord intimate way.

I believe that our Father God will bring us in His secret chamber to have the intimate relationship individually.

III. Jesus asked Father to return to His Glory

     예수님께서 당신자신의 영광 회복을 간구하심

John 17:5 (요한복음)

Now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You

before the world was.

아버지여 창세 전에 내가 아버지와 함께 가졌던 영화로써 지금도 아버지와 함께 나를 영화롭게

하옵소서

1. the glory which I had with You before the world was.

     창세 전에 내가 아버지와 함께 가졌던 영화로써

Colossians 1:15-17  (골로세서)

¹⁵ He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

그는 보이지 아니하시는 하나님의 형상이요 모든 창조물보다 먼저 나신 자니

¹⁶ For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through Him and for Him.

만물이 그에게 창조되되 하늘과 땅에서 보이는 것들과 보이지 않는 것들과 혹은 보좌들이나 주관들이나 정사들이나 권세들이나 만물이 다 그로 말미암고 그를 위하여 창조되었고

¹⁷ He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

또한 그가 만물보다 먼저 계시고 만물이 그 안에 함께 섰느니라

2. Now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself

     지금도 아버지와 함께 나를 영화롭게 하옵소서

Philippians 2:5-11 (빌립보서)    

⁵ Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,  

너희 안에 이 마음을 품으라 곧 그리스도 예수의 마음이니

⁶ who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,

그는 근본 하나님의 본체시나 하나님과 동등됨을 취할 것으로 여기지 아니하시고

⁷ but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

오히려 자기를 비어 종의 형체를 가져 사람들과 같이 되었고

⁸ Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

사람의 모양으로 나타나셨으매 자기를 낮추시고 죽기까지 복종하셨으니 곧 십자가에 죽으심이라

⁹ For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,

이러므로 하나님이 그를 지극히 높여 모든 이름 위에 뛰어난 이름을 주사

¹⁰ so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

하늘에 있는 자들과 땅에 있는 자들과 땅 아래 있는 자들로 모든 무릎을 예수의 이름에 꿇게 하시고

¹¹ and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

모든 입으로 예수 그리스도를 주라 시인하여 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하셨느니라

3. Restored His Glory

    회복되신 예수님의 영광

Ephesians 1:20-23 (에베소서)

²⁰ which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places,

그 능력이 그리스도 안에서 역사하사 죽은 자들 가운데서 다시 살리시고 하늘에서 자기의 오른편에 앉히사

²¹ far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

모든 정사와 권세와 능력과 주관하는 자와 이 세상뿐 아니라 오는 세상에 일컫는 모든 이름 위에 뛰어나게 하시고

²² And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,

또 만물을 그 발 아래 복종하게 하시고 그를 만물 위에 교회의 머리로 주셨느니라

²³ which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

교회는 그의 몸이니 만물 안에서 만물을 충만케 하시는 자의 충만이니라

IV. Jesus gives the eternal life

      예수님께서 영생을 주신다

John 17:2-3 (요한복음)

² as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him.

아버지께서 아들에게 주신 모든 자에게 영생을 주게 하시려고 만민을 다스리는 권세를 아들에게 주셨음이로소이다

³ “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

영생은 곧 유일하신 참 하나님과 그의 보내신 자 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이니이다

1. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life

    예수님만이 길이요, 진리요, 생명이다

Jesus is the only One our Lord and Savior, and there is no other.

John 14:6 (요한복음)

I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me

내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라

Jesus is the only one gives us the eternal life.

2. Eternal Life

    영생이란 무엇인가?

What is the eternal life?

People response – live eternally

Eternal life word itself mean live eternally.

We are going to face two eternal matter.

Eternal life in Heaven or eternal life in hell.

So Eternal life means more that live eternally.

Jesus gave the definition verse 3

1) They may know You, the only true God

2) They may know Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

The eternal life is To know the true God and to know Jesus Christ.

1) the True God

    진리의 하나님을 아는것

The true God is love and He loves us so much.

We have only One True God, and others are from satan.

Our God Yahweh is the only True God, and others are not God at all, but the evil spirits from satan. Their goal is steal, kill and destroy, and there is no hope from them, but torment.

Our God loves us and have a great hope and future for us.

The eternal life is to know the True God.

2) Jesus Christ

     예수 그리스도를 아는것

Jesus is His only begotten Son, and He is the action of the Love of the True God.

The True God sent Jesus Christ for us as the Redeemer for us.

The True God and Jesus Christ are One.

The eternal life is to know Jesus Christ.

3) To Know (ginoskow)

     안다는 의미는 무엇인가?

In Greek “ginoskow” and “oida”

헬라어의 알다라는 의미가 두가지가 있다.

“기노스코”와 “오이다”

Oida means to know in knowledge

오이다 – 지식적으로 안다는 의 미로 쓰여졌다.

Ginoskow means to know through the experience – use term as the marriage life as the relationship with husband and wife

기노스코 – 경험적으로 안다는 의미로 쓰여졌다. 또 이 의미는 부부간의 깊은 관계를                         표현할때 이 단어를 쓴다.

This word means about the intimate relationship.

So this eternal life means to have the intimate relationship with the True God and Jesus Christ – the true relationship.

예수님께서 사용하신 단어는 기노스코이다.

God invites us to the deeper relationship.

God wants you to come to the deeper level of the relationship more and more.

다시 말하면 영생이란 단순히 영원히 사는것이 아니라, 우리가 영원히 아버지 하나님과 예수님과 깊은 관계를 갖으며 산다는 의미이며, 또한 이 영생은 미래의 일뿐만 아니라 지금 이 시간부터 하나님께서는 우리와 깊은 교제를 원하시고 또한 우리를 지금 이시간 초청하시고 계신다.

우리가 죽은 후에 영생을 미래에 만 누리는 것이 아니라 지금 이시간부터 우리는 이 영생을 주님과 함께 누리는 것이다.

How can we enter into His deeper chamber?

You are already invited, so all we have to is to jump in.

우리는 어떻게 주님과 이런 깊은 관계를 가질수 있는가?

주님께서는 당신을 이 깊은 관계 속으로 초대하셨기 때문에, 이제 당신은 그 관계 속으로 뛰어들기만 하면 됩니다.

a) Practical action

    실제적인 행동

We need to spend more time with the Lord if you want to enter His chamber.

Simply you can start to pray in spirit instead of the flesh prayer.

You can spend time with the word of the Lord and meditate the word of God.

Keep dialog with the Lord, not just prayer or just read, but wait the Lord what He is saying to you.

Worship the Lord constantly

b) Prepare your heart

    마음을 준비해야함

Humble yourself

Committed fully

Remove ungodly mind

Holy and pure life separate from sin

Obedience without hesitation.

Conclusion

Jeremiah 29:13 (예레미야)

You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.

너희가 전심으로 나를 찾고 찾으면 나를 만나리라

2 Chronicles 16:9a (역대하)

For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.

여호와의 눈은 온 땅을 두루 감찰하사 전심으로 자기에게 향하는 자를 위하여 능력을 베푸시나니

We are going to continually focus on the intimate relationship whole this year together in step by step.

Let’s start with the major communication method; word and prayer.

If you do not read Bible in regular basis, then from now on commit to reading certain number of chapters in a day, from today not for tomorrow. If you do not spend time to pray then start from today.

I will share with you how we are going to have a fellowship with the Lord and communicate with Him daily in coming weeks and months.

There was one boy who was instructed to pray for 15 minutes, 15 minutes of reading Bible and sharing the gospel. He did keep this commitment seriously and kept doing throughout his life for so many years – Billy Graham
